I too like herons. They seem prehistoric. Is this a birch tree? Looks like it has smooth bark that tends to peel.
Until last year, I'd seen a great blue heron only once in my life. This past sumer, we bought kayaks, and we saw them nearly every time we went out. They are most magnificent birds.
I have never seen one of these in person before. Great beak!
Looks like last years nest needs a makeover..do you know where the herons migrate to?

I want a blue heron! So cool that they are coming back now, maybe that means Spring is coming early! Awesome capture!
